Raja Nabakrishna Deb  started the Durga Puja at Sovabazar in 1757 and it  is now over 250 years old. Raja Nabakrishna Deb observed Durga Puja in his newly constructed Shobhabazar Rajbari  in honor of Lord Clive and the  East India Company sahibs for celebrating their victory in the Battle of Plassey.. The famous Dancing Girls, Baaiji & Niki Baai were chosen to entertain them. Henceforth, this Puja came to be known as  “Company Puja”.  The Ramayana, one of the two great Indian epics, narrates that Lord Rama worshiped Devi Durga to seek her blessings for victory over Ravana. Controversies, myths, legends, and folklores all converge on the focal point of the skilled men at work – the clay idol makers or potters at Kumortuli in Kolkata, situated on the bank of the Hugli River.
